RESUMEN: Para cualquier ciudadano del mundo acceder a una alimentación sana y nutritiva es un derecho

fundamental; sin embargo, en América Latina y el Caribe más de 50 millones de personas padecen

inseguridad alimentaria y 1 de cada 10 pobladores sufre de hambre. El objetivo de este artículo fue analizar el

estado de la seguridad alimentaria en la región y examinar los efectos perniciosos de la inseguridad

alimentaria. Se identifica el estado de las cuatro dimensiones de seguridad alimentaria en los países de la

región, tratando de comprender las causas del hambre en América Latina y el Caribe y, de otro lado, examinar

las consecuencias sociales y económicas de la malnutrición, en especial respecto al sobrepeso y obesidad

como condiciones que predisponen a las enfermedades cardiometabólicas como hipertensión arterial y

diabetes mellitus que tienen un serio impacto económico y social sobre todo en países más pobres. Aunque

todavía contamos con una sociedad resiliente, sostenemos que persiste una aparente indiferencia de los

Estados de la región para reconocer a la inseguridad alimentaria como el daño más importante que debería

prevenirse y resolverse.

ABSTRACT: For any citizen of the world, access to healthy and nutritious food is a fundamental right;

However, in Latin America and the Caribbean, more than 50 million people suffer from food insecurity and 1 in

10 inhabitants suffers from hunger. The objective of this article was to analyze the state of food security in the

region and to examine the pernicious effects of food insecurity. The status of the four dimensions of food

security in the countries of the region is identified, trying to understand the causes of hunger in Latin America

and the Caribbean and, on the other hand, examining the social and economic consequences of malnutrition,

especially with respect to to overweight and obesity as conditions that predispose to cardiometabolic diseases

such as arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus that have a serious economic and social impact, especially

in poorer countries. Although we still have a resilient society, we maintain that there is an apparent indifference

on the part of the States of the region to recognize food insecurity as the most important da mage that should

be prevented and resolved.
