RESUMEN: La relevancia del desarrollo local en el contexto cubano coloca a las comunidades geográficas en
el centro de atención. El caso particular de la comunidad de estudio responde al municipio San Antonio de los
Baños perteneciente a la provincia Artemisa. La investigación analiza qué problemáticas catalizan la
participación social y cómo se articulan los pobladores para integrarse a los procesos de transformación que
tienen lugar en ella. Los resultados apuntan a la identificación de necesidades sentidas de índole económica,
social y cultural derivadas de una serie de problemas. Hacia la búsqueda de soluciones se orienta la
participación de los pobladores. Aunque las acciones de participación son puntuales, albergan la potencialidad
de ser sistemáticas y abarcadoras. Las redes que se articulan en torno a dichas formas de participación
incluyen fundamentalmente a familiares, amigos y vecinos; también se aprecia un enlace con los actores
institucionales.

ABSTRACT: The relevance of local development in Cuba places geographic communities at thecenter of
attention. The particular case of the study community responds to the San Antonio de los Baños municipality
belonging to the Artemisa province. The research analyzes what problems catalyze social participation and
how residents are articulated to integrate into the transformation processes that take place in it. The results
point to the identification of economic, social and cultural needs arising from a series of problems. The
participation of the inhabitants is oriented towards the search for solutions. Although participation actions are
punctual, they harbor the potential of being systematic and comprehensive. The networks that are articulated
around these forms of participation mainly include family, friends and neighbors; it is also appreciated a link
with institutional actors.
